The Alliance for American Leadership offers legislative/policy, communications, and political strategy internships. All internships are unpaid, volunteer roles. Interns may work virtually or in-person in Washington, DC. Full position descriptions are included at the bottom of this page. If you are interested in applying for an internship, please join one of our weekly online interviews. 

We hold interviews every Wednesday and Friday. You will introduce yourself, talk about your background, and ask our team anything you want to know. No preparation is needed. All times are in Eastern (New York) time.

While our interviews are open to all applicants, we will only accept the best applicants onto our team.

Senior Staff / Volunteers

We are currently only hiring for unpaid, volunteer roles. Full job descriptions are included at the bottom of this page. 

If you are interested in volunteering as a policy advisor, government affairs advisor, communications advisor, or political consultant on our team, please join one of our weekly group interviews described above. Likewise, if you’re not sure how you want to help yet, but want to learn more, please join one of the interviews. These sessions are the fastest way to get acquainted with what we do and join our team.

Advisory Board

Advisory Board Members are business and government leaders who donate or raise $1,000 or more a quarter for the Alliance and support strategic decision-making. Members are also invited to private events with Members of Congress and are featured on our website. We hold optional Advisory Board meetings every two months.

Members of our Advisory Board include former USAID Administrator Brian Atwood, former Congressman Tim Mahoney, Wesleyan University President Michael Roth, diplomats, veterans, lawyers, and business leaders across healthcare, technology, finance, development, government affairs, and defense. Internship Position Descriptions

All internships are unpaid, volunteer roles. Interns may work virtually or in-person in Washington, DC. Interns commit anywhere from 10 to 40 hours a week. 

Policy/Government Affairs Intern

Support our research and advocacy from the ground up.

You will:
- ​Meet with congressional staff
- ​Draft legislation
- ​Conduct research to inform the future of foreign assistance and draft policy briefs
- ​Draft letters to the editor
- ​Take notes during briefings and hearings
- ​Proofread memos and maintain our internal documents

Political Strategy Intern

Gain hands-on experience in political fundraising, PAC strategy, and grassroots organizing.

You will:
- ​Vet and interview congressional candidates A4AL is considering endorsing
- ​Support our endorsed candidates through grassroots organizing and communications
- ​Research prospective donors and analyze data from comparable organizations
- ​Have conversations with senior business and political leaders about the Alliance and ask them to donate

​Communications Intern

Communications interns join one of five teams:

Social Media: Create and manage content for LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok.

Press: Write press releases and pitch newspapers, TV, radio, and podcasts.

Email and SMS: Draft messages to our network and manage our contact list.

Website: Edit our website in Framer.

Design: Build flyers, presentations, and graphics in Canva, PowerPoint, and other tools.


Senior Staff Position Descriptions

We are currently only recruiting for unpaid, volunteer roles. Many senior leaders work with our team on a part-time basis or while they are looking for a paid position. Staff may work virtually or in-person in Washington, DC.


Policy Advisor / National Security Policy Advisor / Public Health Policy Advisor / Global Development Policy Advisor

Policy Advisors contribute substantive expertise to A4AL's work on foreign assistance, national security, public health, and/or international development. Advisors draft articles for our think tank, write policy memos and briefs, contribute to legislative proposals and administration outreach, and support the Policy Director in advancing A4AL's priorities. This role is structured to fit alongside a primary career, most Policy Advisors are senior practitioners contributing on a part-time basis.


Communications Advisor

Communications Advisors specialize in a particular area - web development, press, Substack, or social media - and either fill a specific leadership role within those teams or serve in a senior advisory capacity to existing team leads. This role contributes professional experience and judgment to A4AL's communications strategy, mentors junior team members, and helps elevate the quality and impact of A4AL's public-facing work. Communications Advisors may write and publish articles sent to our 90,000 subscribers on Substack. 


Political Consultant 

Political consultants help A4AL develop our electoral strategy and lead outreach to congressional campaigns. They may also assist with donor outreach and fundraising events in partnership with our endorsed candidates. 


Government Affairs Advisor

Government Affairs Advisors support A4AL’s legislative strategy by leading congressional engagements, preparing briefings, and strengthening communication between internal leadership and external partners. This role ensures that legislative projects move forward efficiently, interns remain engaged and supported, and congressional relationships are maintained with professionalism and consistency. 


Finance Advisor

Finance Advisors support A4AL's fundraising strategy by leading donor outreach, planning events with members of Congress, and strengthening relationships between the organization and its supporters.
